The motherland of the Sarracenia is the USA, it dwells the central and South East parts such as Carolica and Georgia althought it could be also found in Canada. It is known as the trompet pitchers, because of the modified leaf which has become tubular and widens at the top.
Every pitcher has a lid, which covers the plant from pollution with fragments. These fragments may sometimes block the tube, but also acts as a landing platform for the insects, it’s preys.
Some of them have very specific and colourful nerves and most have the same form like other “nodding” flowers. Sarracenia trap its preys by offering them nectar to sip which is secreted around the lip of the plant and also at the base of the lid. Insects which land on the lip drink from the nectar, which contains a chemical that makes the insect 'drunk' and once insects try it they easily fall in to the tube which narrows toward the base. Once inside an insects fate is sealed as the pitcher has downward pointing hairs which help the insect go further down the tube but prevent their escape back up it. When the insect reaches the bottom of the pitcher it is dissolved by enzymes and the nutrient value is absorbed by the plant. These plants are perfect for the border of your window or for planting in your garden. Ih this way they will seize insect during the whole year, and you will enjoy your wonderful “nodding” flowers. |
